Originally created to support lymphoblastoid cells in suspension cultures, RPMI 1640 has since been found to have a wide variety of applications in mammalian cell culture. RPMI 1640 is used with many cell types including human T and B lymphocytes, bone marrow cells, and hybridoma cells. The medium is commonly modified with or without the presence of L-Glutamine, Phenol Red, and HEPES. RPMI 1640 gets its name from the center in which It was developed, the Roswell Park Memorial Institute.
